The literal translation of Dal Tadka is Dal=lentil and tadka=tempering. Tadka is a term we often use in Indian cooking for the process of adding seasoning to a dish. It mostly involves adding spices like cumin seeds, mustard seeds, garlic, chilies, curry leaves etc. to hot oil or ghee.

It's a wholesome meal which is loaded with protein, vitamins and minerals. Good source of dietary fibre regulates blood sugar spike. It's easy to make and pairs very well with ghee rice. Do try.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup chana daal
  • 1/4 cup moong daal
  • 1/4 cup toor daal
  • Onion 2 small
  • Tomato 3 small
  • Green chillies 2
  • Coriander leaves handfull
  • Ginger 1 inch piece finely chopped
  • Cumin powder 1tsp, red chilli powder 1 tsp
  • Ghee 3 tbsp
  • Curry leaves 4 springs
  • Mustard seeds 1/2tsp
  • Urad Daal 1/2tsp
  • Cumin seeds 1/2tsp
  • Asfeotida powder 1/4tsp
  • Dry Red chilies 1

Directions

  • 1Soak the chana daal for couple of hours. After that in a pressure cooker add all the 3 varieties of daal along with chopped onions, green chillies , ginger,tomatoes, salt , haldi , red chili powder and enough of water to pressure cook, this is a semi thick gravy dont put too much water. Pressure cook it till all the daals are fully cooked. Once cooked see the consistency if its thick add little water and 1 tsp cumin powder.
  • 2In a another pan add ghee for the tadka add mustard seeds, urad daal , cumin seeds, dry red chili, curry leaves, asfeotida powder. Now add this tadka to the daal add coriander leaves and serve hot with ghee rice.
