Summer's about to end but don't miss out on this sweet, creamy cold drink you will surely love. Beat the heat by drinking one of the famous chillers in the Philippines, Banana con yelo. This famous cold treat is just basically a sweetened plantain poured with milk and served with ice cubes or shaved ice. It's easy, cheap but tastes superbly delish!
Make sure that the plantain you bought in the market are not too ripe, should be big and does not have bruises. Plantain with bruises tastes different.
When serving it, it is better that you pour the milk and put the ice without letting the sweetened plantain cool. It is delicious treat of hot and cold sweetened plantain. This recipe is good for beginners and for foodies who crave something sweet and healthy.
Ingredients
- 4-6 ripe plantain, peeled and sliced
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/8 cup lemon juice
- 1/4 evaporated milk, or any milk you like
- Shaved or cubed ice
Directions
- 1Pour water into the pot. Let it simmer.
- 2Add brown sugar, vanilla extract and lemon juice. Stir. Cook for a minute.
- 3Add the sliced plantain. Stir. Cook it at low fire or heat for 10-15 minutes. Cook until the syrup thickens (but not to thick to the point where the syrup seeps into the banana).
- 4Put into a bowl. Put the ice and pour the milk.
- 5Serve. Enjoy!
