Waffle, an amazing versatile breakfast cum snack cum dessert, is an easy and quick reply to every kid's snack attack, specially now, when they are in locked down mode(thanks to this Covid pandemic). Well not only kids, its loved by grown ups alike I must say. From its availability at cafes, to commercially frozen ones in your freezer its easy access is made it a popular snack over the years. Well I'm not a big fan of frozen snacks, so I end up buying a waffle iron and the snack attack is settled for now.
I did a little research on where it all started from and seems like its dating back to Greece, wherein thin wafers were first made by pressing batter between two circular metal plates attached to a long wooden handle. Obelios as it was called, was not particularly sweet, but was more popular for variety in customized plate designs unlike the one we know today, which over years gained a sweet tooth and evolved more into variety in sweet toppings. Eventually the irons grew deeper, wafer became, wafel. Today this delicacy has evolved over years and travelled round the globe, attained various names.
That is what the early mould looked like. Image credit: Wikipedia. Its intriguing to imagine variety of patterns going on that wafer.
The english first call it "Waffles" with the extra "f", like we know it today. Dutch started using rectangular plates instead of circular ones. In Germany coffee waffles got famous while the french call it "Gaufres". In Belgium they got thicker and the popular "Liege waffle" was born. Well I just realised that all that info is just going to fade out the appetite which I intially intended to build. So, without more complicated text, let's just jump to this simple and basic waffle batter recipe. Top it and dress it to your hearts fill, my favourites are strawberries/bananas-maple syrup or chocolate. Well the options are limitless!!
