My maternal side belongs from Sri Lanka and so my mom cooks some of the dishes of Ceylon. This bitter gourd salad recipe is a must in our house with daal and rice. The tangy crisp bitter guard with onions and tomatoes further enhance the taste of daal and rice.
Many don't like bitter gourd for its bitter taste, but it is used in Asian cuisine. Bitter gourd is found to be useful in the treatment of diabetes. A cautionary note for the pregnant ladies though, don't consume before consulting your doctor as it induces bleeding and contractions.
Its super easy to make. Wash and slice the bitter gourd discarding the core.
Fry on medium heat till light brown and crispy.
In a bowl, add onion, tomato, lemon juice, red chilli flakes and salt. Toss in the bitter gourd slices. Serve with daal and rice. Enjoy!
Ingredients
- 2 bitter gourd/ bitter melon/ karela
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 onion chopped
- 1 tomato chopped
- Oil to fry
Directions
- 1Wash and slice the bitter gourds discarding the core.
- 2Deep fry on medium heat till light brown. Allow to cool.
- 3In a bowl, add onions, tomato, red chilli flakes, lemon juice and salt. Toss in fried bitter gourd slices.
- 4Serve with daal and rice. Enjoy!
